Interpretation at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

How do you interpret the history of a place that is older than the U.S., encourage people to explore a one-of-a-kind wildlife ecosystem, and share crucial messaging about how to sustain this place for future generations? Located in St. Augustine, Florida, the new wayside exhibits at Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments do just that. Recently, 106 Group and the National Park Service presented a session at the 2020 National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Conference, highlighting how contemporary challenges are addressed at these historic sites.

Conveying complex histories and guidance for stewardship to over 600,000 visitors each year, 30% of whom are Spanish speakers, was no small task. Our team of planners, designers, illustrators, and National Park Service staff collaborated to interpret this place through stories told in multiple languages, and supported with illustrations, touchable sculpture, and audio description scripts.

Our presentation included a sneak peek at the newly created virtual tour of the sites, which includes room explorations, 3D models, and a guided trail. The virtual tour was created by NPS in partnership with the University of South Florida Libraries.

Steven Roberts

Steven is Chief of Interpretation & Education for Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments. With more than 30 years of experience in the interpretive field, Steven has worked for the National Park Service as a volunteer, a cooperating association employee, and as a professional interpreter. He recently served as chair of the NAI 2020 Conference Committee.

Chris knows how to utilize the latest technology to engage visitors, but also understands that not all exhibits have to be high tech to be highly engaging. In his spare time, Chris is a tinkerer and maker who creates digital devices, including a scratch-built and programmed multi-touch table and raspberry pi photo booth.
