106 Group led the development of a new interpretive plan for the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail on Hawai‘i Island. In collaboration with PBR HAWAII, Hoa’āina Heritage Services, the State of Hawai‘i Trail and Access Program, and the National Park Service, we created an interpretive framework and creative vision that highlight the trail’s cultural, historical, and natural significance, weaving together Native Hawaiian perspectives, stewardship values, cultural resource preservation, and environmental sustainability.
Scope
Our work included periodic meetings to ensure alignment, deep engagement with community stakeholders and families with lineal and cultural ties to the corridor, and an adaptable, customized planning process. This plan defines interpretive goals and objectives, identifies target audiences, recommended effective interpretive methods and promotes community‑based stewardship strategies.
Outcome
The document combines foundational information and guidelines with a flexible framework to support development of interpretive initiatives by a range of agencies, organizations, land managers, and communities. The interpretive plan was refined through ongoing stakeholder feedback and iterative revisions. Grounded in cultural sensitivity and authenticity, the plan fosters deeper connections among people, the land, and the cultural heritage of the Ala Kahakai corridor.
