106 Group was engaged by Bloedel Reserve to develop an Interpretive Master Plan for their 140-acre public gardens and forest preserve on Bainbridge Island, Washington. In collaboration with team members Full Circle Indigenous Planning + Design and TLÂLLI Collaborative, we facilitated a comprehensive planning process, including extensive engagement with staff, stakeholders, and the Suquamish Tribe, as well as visitor research, documentation analysis, and a site visit. We guided a thoughtful process of reexamining organizational identity, with a strong focus on refining mission, vision, and values.
Scope
The plan enhances the visitor experience by celebrating the Reserve’s natural beauty, fostering a sense of tranquility, and honoring the legacies of its founders, Prentice and Virginia Bloedel. Our approach aligned with the Reserve’s goals by emphasizing cohesive interpretation, clear messaging, improved accessibility, and a unified visual design. The plan included a preliminary design concept for wayfinding and orientation signage.
Outcome
The plan resulted in actionable strategies to enhance visitor engagement, improve storytelling, and create a more welcoming environment. It supported Bloedel Reserve’s Strategic Plan by prioritizing sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity, setting the stage for continued growth and ensuring the Reserve remains a thriving destination.
