The Picotte Center Board of Directors enlisted 106 Group to lead exhibit design efforts as part of the restoration of the Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Memorial Hospital on the Omaha Reservation in Walthill, Nebraska. Originally built in 1913 under Dr. Picotte’s leadership, the hospital stands as a National Historic Landmark.
Scope
The hospital serves as a powerful symbol of Dr. La Flesche Picotte’s lasting legacy. As the first Native American physician in the United States, she dedicated her life to caring for her Umoⁿhoⁿ people, advancing public health initiatives, and advocating for land rights. 106 Group, working closely with the project team, architects, and Tribal representatives, developed interpretive exhibits displayed in a dedicated museum space and throughout the first floor.
Outcome
Following its restoration, the hospital reopened as the Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center, a multipurpose community resource. The exhibits now commemorate Dr. Picotte’s achievements and celebrate Umoⁿhoⁿ culture, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the history of the Omaha people.
