At the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, Historic Fort Snelling reflects centuries of American history—Dakota homelands, early military presence, immigration, statehood, and veteran services. For more than 20 years, 106 Group has partnered with the Minnesota Historical Society, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other stakeholders to support preservation and revitalization across the Lower Post, Upper Post, and National Cemetery
Scope
Our work has encompassed archaeological investigations, architectural history studies, and preservation planning to protect historic resources while accommodating modern use. We have prepared construction monitoring plans, guided National Register evaluations, consultation with tribal nations, and supported federal and state review processes. These services have addressed historic structures, landscapes, public spaces, and burial grounds, ensuring compliance with preservation laws and respectful stewardship of the site.
Outcome
Through more than a dozen major initiatives, 106 Group has contributed to a strong framework for Fort Snelling’s future. Highlights include preservation planning for the Round Tower, archaeological monitoring for redevelopment projects, and award-winning building rehabilitations for new purposes. Together, these efforts safeguard the site’s layered history and strengthen its role as a place of memory and reflection for generations to come.
