106 Group led the Mission San Juan exhibit project at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, enhancing the visitor experience with updated interpretive displays in the historic contact station and Tufa House. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mission San Juan preserves the history of Spanish colonization and Indigenous heritage in Texas. The exhibits feature bilingual, tactile, and interactive elements that include descendant perspectives for a more inclusive storytelling approach.
Scope
Spanning approximately 1,500 square feet, the project involved coordinated planning with park staff, mission descendants, and regulatory bodies. Key features include a San Antonio River table with tactile mission models, an interactive acequia display, native plant reliefs, a tortilla press, and a genealogical database in the Tufa House. These elements offer a multisensory learning experience while respecting preservation guidelines.
Outcome
The exhibits integrate universal design principles, ensuring accessibility, and are minimally invasive to the architecture. By incorporating descendant narratives and improved wayfinding, the project strengthens visitor engagement and supports increased tourism to this significant World Heritage site. The project was recipient of a Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota.
