106 Group designed wayfinding and interpretive signage for the Shakopee Riverfront Cultural Trail, ready for fabrication. The signs, which follow the trail as it winds along the south bank of the Minnesota River, help to caption the landscape while bringing the area’s rich history and cultural heritage to life.
Scope
With style guidelines strongly inspired by the landscape and cultural significance of the area, the sign family engages visitors with Dakota language and culture, provides navigational aids, maps, and trail rules while encouraging exploration of nearby points of interest. Collaborating with five community partners including the City of Shakopee and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, we integrated original artwork, ensuring the design respects and reflects Dakota culture, while fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the land.
Outcome
We also highlighted the riverfront’s natural resources, emphasizing the interconnectedness of wildlife and incorporating Dakota knowledge of the environment. Two 3D tactile maps were designed to make the trail experience more inclusive, offering an accessible, hands-on experience with raised lettering.
